Have Windows & on new laptop. HP dv7 series. Came with Home Premium 64, upgraded to Pro64. I need the laptop to communicate with CNC equipment that requires netbeui protocol. Have read similar questions posted, usually (non)answered by references to MS statement that it is not a supported protocol anymore. That approach does not help me. I need to know how to get Win7 to talk with my CNC Router, and modifying the CNC Router's controller is not an option. Therefor I need a Win7 side solution. I have followed the XP method of placing the two netbeui files in their respective places, however, trying to install a new protocol hasn't worked because netbeui is NOT displayed as an option to install. But based on my experience, here is workaround that install this protocol for server 2008: 1. Perform install new protocol steps on 2008, and you can found that IPX/SPX is listed in viable protocol list. Being 32 bit drivers, I'm not sure what problems you'll run into on a natively 64 bit OS, but this is a workaround, so I guess issues are not unexpected. (Having posted that, you really should do like Mark suggested and let obsolete technology rest in peace.). Microsoft's official answer is to ask Novell as it is a Novell protocol. Novell's official answer is that it is a Microsoft operating system, ask Microsoft. (Recent versions of Novell Client do not support IPX) For gaming appears to be the best bet, but is not compatible with ipx at the wire level. There are advantages as this allows you to play with people on other networks without doing ipx routing. The disadvantages are that if you have some computers that talk ipx, you still need the wrapper, and it is not available for os/2, netware or linux (or anything else besides windows, although source code is available). For use with industrial equipment like cnc setups there are no good answers. You may be able to get xp's drivers to work on newer operating systems, but getting it to work with 64bit operating systems does not appear to work and 32bit operating systems are difficult at best. You are in about the same boat for netbeui, but there is some support for dlc from microsoft but they use ip and a gateway.
